What to check before buying a used car in the UK

Before you view the car

Run a vehicle history check using the registration number. Resolve any finance or write-off flags before you travel — sellers sometimes withdraw listings when serious issues appear.

At the viewing

• Match the VIN and registration to the V5C logbook
• Compare dashboard mileage to MOT history — gaps or sudden drops are a red flag
• Look for uneven panel gaps, overspray, or mismatched tyres that may indicate accident repair
• Ask directly about insurance claims and why the car is for sale

Documents to request

Service history, last MOT certificate, and proof the seller owns the vehicle (name on V5C). If they are a trader, note their business details for future contact.

When to pay for a full report
